Where should you start to find out about your ancestors? Most of the popular sites provide some free research ability, but many require membership for more detailed research and information. One exception to that is Family Search, which is excellent and totally free. Use more than one, each have different databases!

Hands down the most publicized genealogical site, and a constantly expanding source. Several new features and tools, particularly for paying members. Their database continues to be the largest. DNA testing available and provides DNA matching information.
Cyndi's list is the most comprehensive site that provides an index to what information is out there! Cyndi's site first came online in 1996 and it continues to grow. A must stop and perfect jumping off location for your research.
Best free genealogy site there is, perhaps the best site period! Great place to start but also excellent for deep research. Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, who is responsible for digitizing millions of images of local records.
In addition to the standard atDNA (autosomal) testing which most sites provide, this site provides some types of DNA testing not available elsewhere, including Y-DNA, for paternal line ancestry, and mtDNA, for your maternal line. Also contains numerous surname projects you can join to communicate with others searching a common surname.
Databases and newspapers not found on other cites. Good resource for British, Irish and other European research. Basic searches available, membership provides access to much more information, with a free trial membership available. Now offers DNA testing and uploading your DNA data from another site.
My Heritage has some data not found elsewhere, especially for European research. My Heritage is becoming more popular as it continues to enhance its available tools for DNA.
23andMe provides DNA testing and popular for their health reports based on your DNA results.
I think it’s wonderful when kids are interested in learning more about their family history! And kudos to teachers who get kids interested in learning more!
